2023, 2024 Civic Type R Front Mount Intercooler Upgrade, FMIC, MDR Industries, FL5, K20C, Also Fits DE5 Integra Type S, +29 Wheel HP, +18 Wheel TQ
MDR is pleased to announce their Billet Intercooler Upgrade for the 2023+ Honda Civic Type-R FL5. This intercooler is made in the USA, with machined Billet 6061-T6 aluminum end tanks and a industry leading huge 5.50” core to replace the factory’s plastic end tanks and tiny 2.5” core.
Throughout the testing period, MDR calculated heat transfers for different types of fins, with different fin heights, and fin densities to determine the best combination internal and external fin to achieve the highest heat transfer effectiveness, with the lowest pressure drop. They then designed the core with the most effective fin combinations, which in this case was the bar and plate aluminum core design.
The bar and plate core allows the utilization of the entire envelope space, without larger than core sized end plates as compared to the factory tube and fin. Bar and plate cores are designed to withstand high pressure and high vibration applications. Braze sheets seal the entire row as compared to the 0.125” wide sealing surface of the end plate to the extruded tube on tube and fin cores.
FEATURES:
- Billet 6061-T6 aluminum machined end tanks
- No ECU calibrations required
- Utilizes all factory intercooler mounting locations / brackets
- Core size maximizes the opening on the front bumper
- Notable increase in air density
- 100% pressure tested
- TIG welded
- Assembled in Simi Valley, CA
FITMENT:
- 2023, 2024, and Up Honda Civic Type R FL5 K20C
- 2024, and Up Acura Integra Type S DE5, K20C
MDR PERFORMANCE DATA: Google Spreadsheet
- Core size – 5.50” thick x 7.02” stack up height x 28.0” wide
- Surface area – 196.56 in2 / 25.17% increase
- Volume – 1,081.08 in3 / 175.38% increase
- Average pressure drop – 0.85 psi
- Average temperature drop (Entire 3rd Run) – 151.15 deg. F
- Max Inlet Temp. - 318.9 deg. F
- Outlet Temp. - 85.8 deg. F (233.1 deg. F of Drop)
- Pressure Drop - 1.12 psi
FACTORY PERFORMANCE DATA: Google Spreadsheet
- Core size – 2.50” thick x 6.25” stack up height x 25.125” wide
- Surface area – 157.03 in2
- Volume – 392.58 in3
- Average pressure drop – 0.71 psi
- Average temperature drop (Entire 3rd Run) – 138.91 deg. F
- Max Inlet Temp. - 318.6 deg. F
- Outlet Temp. - 136.6 deg. F (182 deg. F of Drop)
- Pressure Drop - 1.01 psi
DYNO COMPARISON DATA:
After months of testing, street driving, several dyno sessions at different phases, and datalogging, this intercooler has exceeded all expectations, both in cooling and performance gains. Dynos were conducted pre-installation with the factory intercooler and compared with the prototype unit on Specialty Z's dyno. The DYNO runs were done on the same car, on the same day. The only other modification was the Hondata 91 Octane base tune was loaded and present on both the stock FMIC runs and the upgrades FMIC runs. What is noticeable during the testing, the temperature of the factory IC rose as the turbo discharge temperature increased throughout the run, while the MDR intercooler kept the temperature very close to ambient throughout the entire testing phase.
Results and side-by-side comparisons are noted in the graphs to the right.
- Factory Intercooler: 302.40 HP / 334.16 ft-lbs Torque @ 28.03 psi
- MDR Intercooler: 331.34 HP / 352.10 ft-lbs Torque @ 27.54 psi
